James Arville Fikes passed away March 29, 2016, at the age of 84.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Linda Lou Van Cleave Fikes; his parents, Clem and Alice Fikes; his brother, Lavern; and his sister, Bonnie Rogene Ketchum.
He is survived by a slew of kids, daughter-and-sons-in-law; a horde of grandchildren, nieces and nephews, Jody and Julie Fikes, Bonnie Callahan, Daphne Fikes and Robert Bardin, Felicia and Bryan Townley, and Rachel and Billy Hicks; and his grandchildren, Morganne and Conner Fikes, Claire, Grace, and Courtney Callahan, Jonathan Bardin, Tyler, Luke, and Peyton Townley, and
Hannah, Averi, and Mallorie Hicks.
James loved working on things, from cars to tractors. After a stint in the Army he returned to Texas where he found employment with Goodyear, Michelin, operated various gas stations, and eventually became an insurance agent and rReal estate agent. He enjoyed people and working in the community. Even during retirement he appreciated the social setting provided by the Senior Citizens Center where he took pleasure in the food and camaraderie.
Gummy, as he was known to his family, was a devoted husband, involved father, doting grandfather, and animal lover. He was never without an animal companion. It wasn't uncommon for strays — animals and kids alike — to benefit from his big ole heart. Needless to say how much love and admiration he held for his grandchildren. A proud Gummy he was — delighting in watching them play in his backyard, or an activity they participated in. For this reason, family gatherings held a special place in his heart, doubly so when it centered around food.
James enjoyed life. He loved and was loved by his family and friends. His family loved what a constant fixture he was in their lives.
He will be desperately missed.
A night of remembrance will be held Tuesday, April 5, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Rest Haven Funeral Home - Royse City Chapel.
James supported several charities. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes everyone to donate to a charity of choice or to the American Diabetes Association.
