Marvel's Story

Marvel G. Gates, 71, a resident of Fate, Texas, for 16 years, passed away Feb. 23, 2016.
He was born March 9, 1944, in Lexington, Okla., to Myrl and Della Gates. He left Oklahoma while young and completed his high school education in Pomona, Calif. Marvel then spent nine years serving his country in the United States Navy. Petty Officer Second Class Gates was a submariner where he served as a fire control tech. He worked many years as a computer hardware engineer. Marvel was a walking history lesson of modern computing, starting with huge main frame computers up through modern data systems.
He earned a B.S. in computer science, graduating with honors in 1997 from Rollins College. While at Rollins Marvel was inducted into the honor societies Phi Theta Kappa and was president of the Rollins chapter of Upsilon Pi Epsilon. He later became an avionics software engineer, ending his career at L-3. Marvel enjoyed woodworking and woodturning and was a former member of the Hunt County Woodturners Club and the Native Plant Society of Texas. He was also a member of the Loyal Order of Moose, the American Legion, the Nature Conservancy, and a lifelong member of the NRA. Mr. Gates was a member of the Transformation Anglican Church in Rockwall, Texas.
Marvel is survived by his loving wife of 28 years, Antonia Messina-Gates; children Cyndi Abbate and husband Alex and Nathan Gates and wife Adrien; grandchildren Brittany Gates, Taylor Gates, Nathan Abbate and wife Jennifer, and Kallie, Jessica, Mackenzie, Dylan and Allie Haralson; great-grandchildren Aubriella and Rylan Abbate; and sister Marlene Connors.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, and great-grandson Hayden Abbate.
Memorial services will be held 11 a.m,, Saturday, March 5, at Rest Haven Funeral Home - Rockwall Chapel with Rev. Don McLane officiating.
