After a decades-long fight with diabetes, Michael Merle Smith passed away peacefully at home on Jan. 29, 2025.
Michael is survived by his spouse Lucienne Smith; stepdaughter Genevieve Hollins; his five siblings Karen Tacti (Sonny), Nancy Watson (Robert), Richard Smith (Debbie), Gary Smith and Terry Thebault (Jimmy); three grandchildren Landan Hollins, Gianna Hollins and Jordan Hollins; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Michael was born in Dearborn, Michigan and had lived all over the world, with his final residence in Texas. During his lifetime, he received a Bachelor of Arts, College of Education, a Master of Arts, College of Education, Ed Specialist, and a Doctorate in Education.
Michael was a devoted husband and grandfather. He served on philanthropic boards and volunteered for various community activities where he lived and worked, was an avid Notre Dame fan and recently completed writing three novels. He also had a quick wit and grand sense of humor.
He will be sorely missed, but forever in our hearts and memories.
The family is asking that in lieu of flowers, people send donations to the Diabetes Research Institute Foundation.
